SDSU Wine Courses Prepare Students for Career Success

The Professional Certificate in the Business of Wine program through SDSU’s College of Extended Studies is designed to prepare you for success in wine-related occupations. Through engaging discussion and directed tastings, The Business of Wine courses let you experience the world of wine twofold: wine education and business education.

 

The College will be offering an intensive course focusing on Australian Wines Mondays, April 7-21, 6-9 pm, as well as the Wine Flaws and Faults course on Saturday, April 12, 9 am-4 pm in this career-enhancing certificate program.

In the Australian Wines course, you will explore in detail why and how Australian exports to the U.S. have undergone an enormous evolution in the past 30 years. You will also learn about the origins of Australia's wine industry and the influences it has had over the past 200 years.

Instructor Deborah Gray is an Australian native who founded her U.S. wine importing company, The Australian Wine Connection, in 1992 with her family’s brand and a collection of small, family-owned wineries. Cost of the course is $209 or $239 after March 28.

 

The Wine Flaws and Faults course will provide you with the insight needed to identify, and accurately describe various wine flaws and faults. You will learn the basic mechanics of wine making and the results of wine making when carelessness and elements beyond the control of the winemaker produces an “off character” in wine, such as volatile acidity, TCA, and Brettanomyces.

 

Instructor Gus Vizgirda is winemaker for Wilson Creek Winery. Cost of the course is $179 or $209 after April 2.

 

Students must be at least 21years of age to enroll in these courses.
