The San Diego Foundation Environmental Program Manager Nominated for Prestigious Fellowship

The San Diego Foundation (www.sdfoundation.org) has announced that Marisa Aurora Quiroz, M.A., Manager of its Environment Program, was one of 19  selected nationwide for a summer fellowship, 2042 Today: YOUNG LEADERS RE-IMAGINING CONSERVATION. This fellowship is aimed at engaging the next generation of conservation leaders across the country, to support their efforts to make nature accessible and relevant to every generation.

As manager of The San Diego Foundation's Parks for Everyone Initiative, Quiroz works closely with donors, volunteers and nonprofits to advance regional conservation efforts, ensure that all communities have access to clean air and water, parks and open space, and promote local action on climate change. She is certified by the International Association of Public Participation in civic engagement and is also a graduate of the HOPE Leadership Institute. Quiroz has a bachelor's degree in Anthropology and Sociology from Mills College, and a master's degree in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from the University of San Diego. In 2010, she was selected as one of San Diego News Network’s 35 Under 35 Community Leaders.

Bob Kelly, President and CEO of The San Diego Foundation, noted that Quiroz represents a true commitment to the mission of the organization. “We are excited for Marisa and honored that she will represent the work of The San Diego Foundation’s Center for Civic Engagement, especially our Parks for Everyone Initiative,” Kelly said.

The Parks for Everyone report, a partnership between The City Project and The San Diego Foundation, uses geographic, demographic and economic data to map and assess the overall accessibility of the region’s green space, as well as to examine the equity of green access by analyzing whether certain groups of people, based on income level, race or ethnicity, have more or less access to these resources.

2042 Today is a training initiative, in collaboration with The Center for Whole Communities and the Center for Diversity and the Environment, that was designed as an innovative leadership development program aimed squarely at young conservation leaders. This program augments a participant's existing skillset while providing them with the practical leadership skills needed as they engage communities and the rapidly changing American society.
