Come On Over: Community Fair Was a Neighborhood Bash

The whole town was invited to this backyard barbecue.

The sure knows how to throw a party. With burgers and hot dogs sizzling on a grill, a bounce house for little ones, and two engines from the Lemon Grove Fire Department, the church welcomed all of Lemon Grove to its first community fair, held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the church parking lot.

The church provided the burgers and dogs, as well as refreshments and popcorn, for free to the crowd. , located right next door, donated barbecued chicken for the affair.There were games for children, cotton candy, and dolls that were being given away.

Inside the church, clothing and some basic necessities were being distributed. Outside, booths were set up offering information on community services and resources. The NPAC Nurse Team, a medical ministry of the church, offered free blood pressure checks and dental care information. Each person who had their blood pressure checked received a consultation and a card on which the date and result had been written.

The five-member Nurse Team is coordinated by Lynn Green, a home health nurse and member of the congregation. Part of the ministry's mission is to educate people about the health risks associated with high blood pressure, which Green says is the No. 1 cause of stroke.

“They call it the silent killer, and it really is,” Green said.“Some people don't what their blood pressure reading is.”

The team offers free blood pressure checks the third Sunday of each month at the church. Green says they see about 50 people each month.
