Get "A Taste of Black History" at Community Celebration

Sponsored by Albertsons, the fifth annual event is being held Saturday at the Lemon Grove store.

A community event celebrating Black History Month will go on rain or shine Saturday at  Albertsons in Lemon Grove, says assistant store manager Daryl Lewis. “A Taste of Black History” was originally scheduled to take place in the store’s parking lot, but has been moved indoors due to rain.

Wet weather or not, there will be plenty of hot food, live music and family-friendly entertainment during the fifth annual celebration, sponsored by the store’s African American Leadership Committee.

Magician/comedian Extreme Rahim! will be appearing for the fourth year in a row to perform his popular act and a storytelling group will offer up folklore and stories about the old days, Lewis says. African artwork will also be on display.

Children are invited to spin a wheel of fortune to win a prize and participate in a coloring contest. There might even be a spelling bee.

Several groups will be on hand with information for the public on a variety of issues that affect the African-American community, including high blood pressure and diabetes.

A barbecue will be going on outside, with food for purchase including ribs and chicken.

“We hope everyone in the community will come out and have a good time,” Lewis says.

The event starts at noon and goes until 4 p.m. at Albertsons, 7090 Broadway. Extreme Rahim! is scheduled to perform at 1 p.m., and the Black Story Tellers of San Diego are scheduled for 2 p.m.
