Lemon Grove Marks 9/11 Anniversary with Tribute to Fallen Heroes

Fire officials carried out the traditional bell ceremony honoring those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

A piece of twisted steel from the World Trade Center brought the immense scale of the 9/11 tragedy close to home as city officials and local dignitaries observed Sept. 11 with a quiet memorial held at the Lemon Grove Fire Department.

Deputy Fire Chief Tim Smith led a tribute to fallen comrades, there was a moment of silence observed, and the flag at Station 10 was lowered to half-staff at 10 a.m.

With the station's 9/11 memorial at his side, firefighter Joe Lavigne solemnly carried out the traditional bell ceremony honoring those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Those gathering at the flagpole to remember the shock and sorrow, and the bravery of first responders and ordinary citizens, included City Manager Graham Mitchell, Superintendent Ernie Anastos, Lemon Grove Historical Society President Helen Ofield, Carol Weiss of the Friends of the Lemon Grove Library, Barbara Martinez of the Lemon Grove School District, and members of the community.
