Live Green: Free Oil Filter Exchange at O'Reilly Auto Parts

A local auto shop is rewarding recyclers.

Looking for a way to clean up your act and tread a little more lightly? A local auto shop has got you covered.

Thanks to the City of Lemon Grove and I Love A Clean San Diego, is holding a . The process is simple: Bring in your used oil filter and receive a new one for free! Grab your used filters from your lawn mowers, cars, trucks and boats and bring them in to recycle.

This free exchange is being made possible by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, or CalRecycle, which says that each year more than two million gallons of motor oil from filters is being disposed of improperly. Recycling motor oil from just one oil change protects a million gallons of drinking water—a one-year supply for 50 people!

Ready to keep the beaches and landfills clean and oil-free? Stop by O’Reilly’s on Saturday, Feb. 18 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. with your old oil filters. Each person who brings in their used filters will get one free new oil filter. Doing your part for Earth has never been so easy!

For residents who can't attend this event, there are more than 300 locations in San Diego County that accept used oil filters from the public for recycling at no charge. Search for ones near you here.

Make sure your motor oil hasn't been contaminated with water or other liquids like antifreeze, solvents, or gasoline. Oil that has been contaminated must be disposed of at a household hazardous waste collection facility.
