It's game on in Lemon Grove with the official opening day of Little League season celebrated Saturday at Monterey Heights Park.
With seven divisions and 26 teams, there are about 414 kids ages 4 to 14 playing ball this year. Teams took to the field at 9:45 a.m. for introductions, and the opening day ceremony began at 10 a.m.
The event got under way with an ROTC color guard presenting the flag for the Pledge of Allegiance, and the national anthem being sung. Superintendent Ernie Anastos was recruited to throw this year's first pitch.
On a sunny and hot afternoon, a crowd of more than 1,000 enjoyed the annual festivities, including a video games trailer, rides, a magician, and a rock climbing wall. There was plenty of food to feast on as well, from adobado tacos to bacon-wrapped hot dogs to pulled-pork sandwiches.
The Patch team was on hand, too, meeting members of the community and giving away our . Congratulations to our winner, Alicia Caneday!
