Public Observance of 9/11 Slated for Lemon Grove Fire Department

Join Heartland Fire & Rescue for a tribute and moment of silence at the station's flagpole.

Heartland Fire & Rescue will remember Sept. 11 with a moment of silence Wednesday at Station 10. The community is welcome to attend this public observance.

A small tribute and a moment of silence will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 11 at the flagpole in from on the Lemon Grove Fire Department, Deputy Fire Chief Tim Smith says. The observance will be followed by an announcement over the air, in coordination with Heartland Communications.

Scores of first responders lost their lives at Ground Zero as they tried to help those trapped in the twin towers. Personnel from the Lemon Grove station were among the national contingents to travel to New York to honor the fallen heroes at funerals following the tragedy and a memorial marking the first anniversary.

In 2011, the department created a local memorial with a piece of steel crossbeam salvaged from the World Trade Center site through an agreement with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
