San Diego Speaks Out on Duck Dynasty Controversy

Lots of local residents are speaking out about comments made by Phil Robinson, the star of the A&E reality show. What are your thoughts?

Whether you watch Duck Dynasty or not, the controversy surrounding Phil Robinson, the patriarch of the family featured on the A&E show, is almost inescapable.

I say this because I awoke this morning to near endless Facebook threads from friends and colleagues offering an opinion. You should all know about the controversy by now. For those of you cut off from most of the media, or if you have been trapped under something heavy and cannot reach your Smart phone, Mr. Robinson recently spoke with GQ Magazine for its January issue.

In remarks recently released, Robinson is quoted as saying (we apologize for the use of language): “It seems like, to me, a vagina -- as a man -- would be more desirable than a man's anus. That's just me. I'm just thinking: There's more there! She's got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I'm saying? But hey, sin: It's not logical, my man. It's just not logical.”

As a writer, I don’t express opinions publicly. And frankly, I’ve never had an interest in the show and never watched. But it surrounds us all at the moment.

Some of the questions this issue seems to have given rise to – again – are: Is homosexuality a choice? Does it violate God’s law? Or is it God’s will that there be gay people? And most importantly, what’s happening to free speech? Is it dangerous now to express an opinion?

We found a few opinions on social media from folks locally. What is your opinion on his comments or the reaction to them?
