Shh! Lemon Grove Library Quietly Opens Ahead of June 1 Ceremony

The long-awaited library was funded by Proposition W, the school bond passed by voters in 2008.

Lemon Grove's new $10.3 million library opened its doors to the public Monday in whisper-quiet fashion.

The soft opening allows library staff time to get day-to-day operations running smoothly in preparation for the grand ribbon-cutting ceremony set for June 1.

A day of festivities is planned to officially introduce the 13,000-square-foot Mission-style facility to the community, including "Lemon Grove Alive," presented by the Lemon Grove Rotary, and Lemon Grove's HEAL Zone Block Party, hosted by the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone and the city.

Librarian Amanda Heller is the new branch manager. Her favorite spot in the new library is the "bright and friendly" children's room—the Virginia Spencer Thren Room. She also points to the collection of brand-new DVDs available for check-out, and the community room as highlights.

The long-awaited library was funded by Proposition W, the school bond passed by voters in 2008. It will be operated in tandem by the Lemon Grove School District and the county library. Middle school children will use a private secure entrance from Lemon Grove Academy during school hours. The building also houses the school’s new administrative offices.

The Grand Opening celebration starts at 10 a.m. June 1 with a ribbon cutting. "Lemon Grove Alive" features a fun run at 11 a.m. and festival entertainment until 5 p.m. Food and drinks will be for sale.

The free Block Party offers contests, games, a bike rodeo, healthy food demonstrations and medical screenings.

The new library's address is 3001 School Lane. Hours are:

9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Thursday

9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday

9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday
