There may be no better year to celebrate Labor Day than this one given the challenges faced by employers and the work force.
But what is Labor Day? It is “a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country, according to the United States Department of Labor that has dedicated a site to the holiday.
The department credits Peter J. McGuire and Peter McGuire as founders of the holiday. Although there seems to be some debate as to which one of them actually founded the holiday back in the late 1800’s.
Check out the Department of Labor’s website to read more on the holiday.
So how did you or are you celebrating the holiday? We present a small gallery of photos from around the region. No matter where your celebrating, we invite all Lemon Grove, Oceanside residents who use Instagram to submit their photos by tagging them #lemongroveca.
If you’re still curious about the labor movement’s past and its current condition, you can check out documentarian Morgan Spurlock’s report on unions featured on CNN’s “Inside Man.” If you know of other documentaries on the topic, feel free to recommend them in the comments.
