Oktoberfest Celebration Kicks Off

The 40th Annual La Mesa Oktoberfest starts today and is expected to draw tens of thousands.

If you're looking to get out of town for a while, the venerable La Mesa Oktoberfest is scheduled to begin today for its 40th annual edition.

The event is expected to attract tens of thousands of revelers to the community's downtown village.

Oktoberfest is held along La Mesa Boulevard in the village area between Acacia and Fourth avenues. The event runs through Sunday and will include a beer garden, more than 250 booths and music.

La Mesa Boulevard will be closed for the weekend and parking will be at a premium. However, the San Diego Trolley's Spring Street stop on the Orange Line is adjacent to the festival location. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. today and Saturday, and noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Today's music lineup begins at 4 p.m. with The Ideas playing rock'n'roll. The beer garden, located in the parking lot along Allison Avenue between Pine and Palm street, will open at 4:30 p.m.
