Fire Fuel-Munching Goats Return to Lemon Grove

Goats that eat fire fuels like oat grass, mustard weed and tumbleweed are scheduled to return to Lemon Grove for two brush-clearing projects later this month and in early June, a spokesman for Heartland Fire & Rescue said Tuesday.

The first project is expected to begin May 23 on about eight acres in the Camino De Las Palmas-Lawton Drive area. The second project has been contracted with four property owners in the 6800 block of Central Avenue to clear up to four acres starting around June 4.

Environmental Land Management of San Diego are providing the goats for both projects, said Thomas Rosenberger of Heartland Fire & Rescue, which covers Lemon Grove, El Cajon and La Mesa.

The fire season so far is being billed by some California agencies as particularly hot, dry and dangerous.
