Proposition 38 Guarantees Essential Funding for San Diego Unified Schools

Prop 38, an initiative on the ballot this November 6th will bring millions of dollars to San Diego Unified schools to restore vital programs that have been cut in recent year.

As a new school year approaches, I'm reminded of how much has been cut from our schools here in San Diego.  My daughter has successfully graduated from San Diego Unified School District and just graduated from college, but the erosion of our public school funding continues to be in my thoughts. I see the rebirth of California’s prominence with the restoration of our schools, because a well-educated workforce produces a stronger middle class. That is why I'm voting in favor of Prop 38 the only proposition on the ballot that begins to provide guaranteed restoration for every public school across in California. When Prop 38 passes on Nov. 6, $133 million a year will be dispersed directly to schools in San Diego Unified School District during the first four years of the life of the proposition, not Sacramento.

Proposition 38 offers five guarantees to parents, educators, students and members of our community, that outline who will be able to make funding decisions, and specifically where that money is going.

  1. The Legislature CANNOT touch any of the money, and it cannot use the new money to replace the funds schools currently receive.
  2. School funding MUST go to every school in California on a per pupil basis and be spent at the school.
  3. The money CANNOT be spent to increase salaries or pensions of school personnel. Prop 38 also prohibits spending more than 1% on administration.
  4. Spending decisions will be made LOCALLY, following public input.
  5. School districts will be ACCOUNTABLE for improvement at each school, based on established annual educational improvement goals.

Prop 38 is paid for by a fair and balanced sliding scale tax. While I don’t have
kids in school anymore, I know there has never been a more important time to
invest in the next generation of California’s leaders. I fight for Prop 38 in
the hopes of assuring today’s students a better education that prepares them to
succeed post graduation.
