Posh Poodle Dog Grooming: A Popular Pampered-Pet Palace

This Lemon Grove business is a favorite dog destination.

Alliteration makes pleasant pronunciation possible. Why is it that people enjoy stringing together in a sentence words starting with the same letter? I think it creates a rhythm of words that makes saying them more fun. The Posh Poodle in Lemon Grove is no exception. The pet grooming shop has a definite rhythm, and was fun even for the dogs I saw coming in the door.

The experience I had with Lena, my late Norwegian Elkhound, was different. She would sniff out the destination about 20 feet before reaching the groomer’s door, and put on the brakes. Not so at the Posh Poodle—there seems to be a less scary olfactory scent for their canine clients. This shop is very dog friendly, and the pet owners know it. The place was packed.

I had to make two visits to get the story. On the first, I walked in and there were two customers in front of me, then there were two behind me, then four, and the phone kept ringing. I explained to owner Beth Hall that Patch wanted to feature her business, and offered to come back later in the afternoon. She thankfully agreed. As I turned to leave, two more customers popped in the door.

Returning 90 minutes later, the scene was a little less busy. I had a chance to talk with Hunt about the Posh Poodle, although the phone still rang every two minutes. She and her husband, Jack Hall, opened the dog grooming location in Lemon Grove in 2003, and have built the business to nine employees. “On an average day we groom 50 to 60 dogs,” Hall said. That’s a lot of clipping, fluffing and brushing—it was like a full-service car wash, with the dogs coming in dirty and leaving sparkling clean.

When asked what types of animals they groom, Hall told me: “Dogs and cats, that’s it, and the percentage is about 99 dogs to one cat.” At those odds, if I were feline, I would probably opt for grooming myself. No self-respecting cat would want to hang with all those barkers.

It is nice to see a Grove business prospering so well in this recovering economy. In fact, the Posh Poodle opened a second shop in Hillcrest just three weeks ago. Key employee Jen Rodgers has created a cute video about their services at the two locations.

I wondered what it would be like to work in such a busy place. Everyone there seemed to enjoy the interaction with the dogs. Groomer Deborah Green said it helps to maintain a sense of fun while you work. Ain't that the truth. Green told me a little story: when the owner of a large yellow lab recently came to pick up his dog, she instead brought him a labrador puppy from the back and told him his dog “shrunk in the wash.”
