Do You Commute on I-15? With Express Lanes Closed, Delays Are Expected

The lanes will be closed for nine days, likely causing heavy congestion in Poway.

An eight-mile stretch of express lanes on Interstate 15 between state Routes 56 and 163 is closed through June 26 in order to finish construction on new lanes.

The closure began Saturday, June 18 and and affects both northbound and southbound I-15. Traffic beyond the immediate area is expected to be impacted, and drivers are urged to alter their schedules, if possible, to avoid commuting during peak hours.

When the lanes reopen on June 27, they will be joined by two new express lanes—for a total of four—that will be open in both directions 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Also on June 27, a three-month closure of the express lane entrance and exit near the I-15/SR 163 split will begin. Detour signs will point drivers to new access points.

Will the express lanes north of SR 56 remain open?

Yes, the express lanes north of SR 56 will remain open during this work. Motorists who regularly use the express lanes to travel south in the morning will be routed out of the express lanes to the main lanes at state Route 56.

Why is this closure necessary?

This closure is necessary for crews to be able to work around the clock to install the new movable barrier and complete important paving, electrical and other important tie-in work near SR 56 and SR 163.

Are there any detours?

Unfortunately, there are no recommended detours as I-15 is the major thoroughfare for inland San Diego County community members, local businesses, commercial trucking and other goods movements. Motorists are strongly encouraged to adjust their schedules during this work.

When will the I-15 express lanes be complete?

The south segment from SR 56/Ted Williams Parkway to SR 163 is expected to be completed by late 2011, almost one year ahead of schedule. The north segment, from state Route 78 to Centre City Parkway in Escondido is also scheduled to be completed by late 2011, right on schedule.
