The numbers are the degress of separation as calculated by a new Google tool called Bacon Number. It's based of "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon," a sort of pop culture parlor game in which players find the fewest links between another actor and veteran leading man Kevin Bacon.
Lively is a 2 because she appeared with Tim Robbins in Green Lantern, and Robbins appeared with Bacon in Mystic River. Paltrow gets a 2 for appearing in Country Strong with Garrett Hedlund, who appeared with Bacon in Death Sentence. Fassbender makes the direct connect by being in X-Men: First Class with Bacon and, therefore, is a 1.
