Hearing Postponed for 3 Held in Shooting Death

Suspects accused of murder are scheduled back in court Sept. 26 for preliminary hearing.

A preliminary hearing scheduled for today was postponed to Sept. 26 for three young men accused in the shooting death of a man in Lemon Grove.

Alfredo Hayes and Eugene Lucious Veal, both 19, and Dasaun Romann Roberts, 20, are each charged with murder in the death of 23-year-old Avel Edgar.

Sheriff's deputies responding to a report of gunfire in the 8200 block of Mount Vernon Street found a mortally wounded Edgar inside a home around 9:45 p.m. March 14. He died at the scene of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Hayes and Veal were arrested a week later, while Roberts was taken into custody April 2. Authorities have declined to disclose a possible motive or discuss what led them to suspect the defendants.

A judge will decide at the end of the preliminary hearing whether there's enough evidence to order the men to stand trial. All three remain jailed in separate detention facilities in the county. Bail for each is set at $1 million, according to jail records.
