San Diego County Whooping Cough Cases Increase to 280

Here’s a roundup of news from San Diego County last week:

—As of July 13, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency reports that there have been 280 cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

“In 80 percent of all cases, the pertussis immunizations prevent children from getting the disease. For those who contract it despite being vaccinated, symptoms are less severe,” said County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten. “The county reminds parents of middle and high school students about the new state law requiring proof that those students have gotten a booster shot on school registration day.”

—A dead bat found in Vista tested positive for rabies, the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency reported.

“This is a reminder to the public to stay away from bats and other wild animals to prevent possible exposure to rabies,” County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said. “If you see a bat, dead or alive, don’t touch it.”

—With more than 12.4 million books, music and movies checked out from July 2010 to June 2011, the San Diego County Library had a record-breaking fiscal year. The circulation jumped 15 percent in one year, representing the informational needs of San Diego residents.

—The Lemon Grove Branch of San Diego County Library hosted its second annual Pride Celebration on July 9, featuring free music, literature, a resource fair and refreshments.

"This is the first library to offer a Pride Celebration in San Diego County," said Library Director José Aponte. "We are proud to welcome all people to San Diego County Library and believe coming together like this builds communities.”

—The Veterans Village of San Diego held its annual Stand Down event Friday through Sunday. VVSD offers a variety of services to veterans, including the Department of Child Support Services, which offered veterans on-site hearings.

—TNT Auction hosted the county’s public auction on Saturday at the Ramona Rodeo grounds, where an array of excess government property from the county and other San Diego agencies went to the highest bidders. Items include cars, trucks, SUVs and school buses. Visit tntauction.com for more info.

—Josh Tickle, author and award-winning filmmaker, will lecture and lead an interactive workshop on public fallacies about domestic biofuels while stirring a case for fleet managers, fuel distributors and others to make the switch on Aug. 11 from 4-6 p.m. at Pearson Fuels in El Cajon. A happy hour reception will immediately follow.

—If you generated more than 12,000 kilograms of hazardous waste or 12 kilograms of extremely hazardous waste in 2010, you might be obligated to prepare SB14 documents by Sept. 1, 2011. SB14 obliges certain hazardous waste generators to contemplate source reduction as the favored technique of handling hazardous waste.
