Ten Years On: Remembering Sept. 11

A piece of the World Trade Center on display at the Lemon Grove Fire Department will be featured as part of Patch's 9/11 photo project.

A 150-pound section of steel crossbeam from ground zero will be featured as part of Patch’s 9/11 photo project commemorating the 10th anniversary of the attacks carried out by al-Qaida terrorists.

The burned and twisted piece of the World Trade Center was acquired by the Lemon Grove Fire Department through an agreement with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and is on display as a public memorial in the lobby at

Nearly 3,000 people were killed in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., when al-Qaida operatives took control of airplanes that were flown into the twin towers and the Pentagon; passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 struggled with its hijackers and the plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, PA.

On Wednesday morning, Lemon Grove fire officials and personnel took part in a photo shoot to create an image that will become part of a national portrait published on Sept. 11 across 850 local Patch sites. 

Lemon Grove Patch thanks all those who were on hand Wednesday, and who serve Lemon Grove every day, including Deputy Fire Chief Tim Smith, Tom McBride, Ray Harper, Brad Maxfield, Joe Lavigne, Chris Wilson, Zach Loftus, Nick Duenez, Brian Hayward, Nick Angelillo and Charlie Lewis. They will all be featured in our Sept. 11 edition.
