Week in Review

It was an eventful week in Lemon Grove, and not just because of the holidays.

If you've been too busy to check in with Lemon Grove Patch this past week, here's a quick roundup of the news:

Monday, Dec. 20: The mother of a Lemon Grove teen who was slain in a drive-by shooting more than two years ago renewed her appeal for help finding his killers. Along with Sheriff's homicide detectives, Charmaine Johnson appeared at a press conference to call for answers in the death of her son, , 16, and his friend, Donnell Davis Jr., 15. They boys were in a car with other friends, on their way home from bowling in Chula Vista when shots were fired from a passing car on March 16, 2008.

Tuesday, Dec. 21: The Lemon Grove City Council finally decided what to do with its  $300,000 share of federal funding. The council voted 4-0, with Jerry Jones absent, to give $4,300 to a San Diego Food Bank program to give backpacks full of food to needy children at San Miguel School on Friday afternoons. The remainder of the money will be used for street repairs. A request for funding from the Center for Social Advocacy, for a tenant-landlord mediation program that has served the city for 24 years, was denied.

Tuesday was also the day the skies opened up and it began to , all day and night, causing flooding, mudslides and numerous traffic accidents throughout the county.

Wednesday, Dec. 22: This day was all about the rain. Heavy, at times unrelenting, and the rest of the county. Many roads were closed due to flooding, trees fell over, and many parts of the county experienced power outages. Lemon Grove had some street flooding, but wasn't hit as hard as many other areas of the county.

Friday, Dec. 24: Acting Gov. Abel Maldonado declared a for  San Diego County, due to the massive floods and mudslides experienced during the storm. The declaration makes the county eligible for state disaster funding for necessary storm-related repairs.

Saturday, Dec. 25: A local photographer captured a very interesting sight over La Mesa on Christmas morning: a large cloud formation that appeared to spell out the word Did you see it?
