Native Soils and Climates of San Diego County

Our speaker, Tim Cass, grew up in Spring Valley. In high school he began spending his spare time hiking the undeveloped areas of southern and eastern San Diego County. He developed an early interest in botany and attended San Diego Natural History Museum classes and field trips. This motivated Tim to acquire a B.S. degree in Wildlife Management from Humboldt State University in northern California. Tim worked as an environmental biologist for private companies traveling the western United States for energy development projects. He then worked for the County of San Diego and San Diego County Water Authority as a biologist.
As a botanist, his specialty is rare and native plants. He has published papers on plant distribution that is associated with different soil types and climates. He also has worked in the nursery trade and grows rare native coniferous trees as a hobby.
Tim’s discussion will focus on both the native soils and the plant climates of San Diego County. This will be an open forum discussion following the interest of all those attending.
