Why Let Time Have All the Fun? Who is Lemon Grove’s Person of the Year?

This poll is in two parts: Nominate your Person of the Year and we’ll have a runoff next month.

On Dec. 14, Time magazine will announce its Person of the Year—which isn’t guaranteed to be an actual man or woman. But in the run-up, the magazine has invited votes on 40 candidates, including Barack Obama, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options include The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle. But who cares about the same-old same-old? Who is Lemon Grove’s Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse”? We won’t preselect your picks. But the ones most often mentioned in the comments (and tell us why) will have a runoff in a month.

Ilse Hanning's long record of extraordinary service to Lemon Grove continues unabated. Former principal of Golden Avenue School (and others), former assistant superintendent of the Lemon Grove School District, the organizational brain behind the successful school bond measures, Prop LL (1998) and Prop W (2008) -- the new library is being built with Prop W money -- long-time board member of Soroptimist International of Lemon Grove and its many activities benefiting this community, member of LG Historical Society, chair of the multi million dollar project at historic St. John of the Cross Church that expanded the parish school, parking lot and landscaped areas and built the lovely, internal rotunda, host of foreign students and Soroptimist guests -- and the list goes on and on. Thousands of people recall her teaching and administrative skills: from teachers and staff she hired and coached, to youngsters in classrooms. Ilse Hanning--Person of the Year!
