Arraignment for Fugitive Shot at Lemon Grove Plaza

Bail was set at $435,000 for Cedric Leroy Black, 22, who was wanted on suspicion of armed robbery and burglary.

The fugitive shot by a deputy U.S. marshal as he tried to escape arrest was in court Friday morning for arraignment on a variety of the lesser charges he is facing.

According to authorities, Cedric Leroy Black, 22, was wanted on suspicion of armed robbery and burglary when he tried to evade law enforcement on and was shot in the arm.

Black was arraigned on several misdemeanor counts, including driving without a license and driving on a suspended license, on Friday morning in San Diego. The suspect is facing felony charges of armed robbery and burglary, for which he will be arraigned on Monday.

He is being held in the county jail. Bail was set at $435,000.

Black was shot when deputy marshals and members of the San Diego Fugitive Task Force moved in to arrest him in the parking lot at Lemon Grove Plaza on Wednesday. Authorities say that as law enforcement pinned in Black’s vehicle, he rammed one of their SUVs and tried to run down a deputy marshal as he sped away from the scene. A deputy marshal opened fire on the suspect’s car, shattering the windshield and striking Black.

A short chase west on state Route 94 ended when Black crashed the car he was driving at the College Grove Way exit. He was taken into custody after a struggle, , a deputy U.S. marshal.

Black was treated for the gunshot wound at a local hospital. He was booked into the county jail on Thursday.
