DUI Checkpoint Scheduled for Friday Night

The effort is being made to remove impaired and unlicensed drivers from the road.

Sheriff’s deputies will be out in force Friday night conducting a sobriety and drivers-license checkpoint in the 6900 block of Broadway in Lemon Grove.

Officers will be looking for drunken and unlicensed drivers during the seven-hour operation which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., according to the sheriff’s department.

Last month, a checkpoint conducted in Lemon Grove over the July Fourth weekend resulted in two drivers arrested on DUI charges and one warrant arrest, according to the sheriff’s department.

Held near Federal Boulevard from 8 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on July 1, 1,360 drivers were contacted, with 53 being sent to secondary inspection, according to Sgt. Herbert Taft. Deputies impounded 19 vehicles and issued 18 citations for driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license.

About 15 DUI-trained deputies from the Lemon Grove Station will staff the Friday night checkpoint, according to the sheriff’s department. The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety.
