Identity of Man Who Committed Suicide on Route 94 Not Known

Incident shut down eastbound lanes of the highway for two hours.

The identity of a man who jumped to his death Tuesday evening in Lemon Grove is still not known today, according to authorities.

The man was seen by numerous witnesses jumping from the Lemon Grove Avenue overpass onto eastbound state Route 94 at about 5:48 p.m. Tuesday, according to Officer Brian Pennings of the California Highway Patrol. Emergency personnel responding to the scene administered CPR to the man, but to no avail. The Medical Examiner’s Office lists the man’s time of death as 6 p.m.

The shut down the eastbound lanes of the freeway for nearly two hours, backing up traffic at rush hour. According to authorities, the highway was closed at Massachusetts Avenue and vehicles were diverted around Lemon Grove Avenue while emergency responders waited for coroner's officials to arrive and transport the man’s body to the Medical Examiner’s office in Kearny Mesa.

All lanes of the freeway were reopened at 7:33 p.m., said Officer Pennings.
