Update: Law Enforcement on the Lookout for Drunken Drivers

Statewide, there were fewer fatalities and more DUI arrests during the New Year's holiday compared to last year.

The New Year’s holiday is a time when many people raise a glass or two, and it’s also a time when too many drinkers get behind the wheel when they shouldn’t.

The California Highway Patrol reported 1,181 arrests for suspicion of DUI statewide between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, and 22 people were killed on California roadways, including five in San Diego County. Last year one person was killed in San Diego County during the New Year’s holiday.

According to figures released by the CHP, the number of fatalities statewide was down from the same time span last year. In 2010-11 there were 25 traffic deaths and 961 DUI arrests.

In San Diego County CHP officers arrested 58 drivers for suspicion of DUI this year, compared to 60 last year, between 6 p.m. Dec. 30 and 11:59 p.m. Jan 1.

In Orange County DUI arrests are up from last year, with 68 this year compared to 36 in 2010-11. One traffic death was reported last year, and none this year.

The numbers of DUI arrests only reflect those made by CHP officers, while traffic-death figures are from all agencies in California. Eleven vehicle occupants were killed within CHP jurisdiction during the holiday, with 10 of those not wearing seatbelts.
