Off-Duty FBI Agent Arrests DUI Suspect at Gunpoint in Lemon Grove

Authorities say it's not clear why the federal officer used his weapon when taking the driver into custody following a solo crash off state Route 94 about 4 p.m. Monday.

A suspect drunken driver crashed a car off state Route 94 near College Grove mall Monday and was promptly arrested at gunpoint by an off-duty FBI agent who happened by.

The driver of the eastbound Chrysler sedan veered off the freeway just west of Broadway in Lemon Grove and went down a landscaped embankment shortly after 4 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Moments later, the federal officer came upon the scene of the non-injury wreck, pulled over and hurried down the slope to check on whoever was in the Chrysler, CHP public-affairs Officer Robert Catano said. Witnesses then began making 911 calls to report that one man was pointing a gun at another one who was lying on the ground near the crashed car.

Arriving Highway Patrol personnel determined that the armed man was a law enforcement officer and that he had taken the motorist into custody due to suspected inebriation.

"It's unclear why (the agent) had the gun out, whether the driver might have been resisting or tried to flee," Catano said.
