A preliminary hearing is scheduled Thursday at the El Cajon courthouse for a father and son accused of carrying out a home invasion robbery in Lemon Grove, where one of the victims was shot and critically wounded.

Gregory Alan Jewell, 49, and Joshua Alan Wineski, 22, are each charged with felony robbery and burglary, according to jail records.

A judge will decide at the end of the preliminary hearing whether the prosecution has presented enough evidence to warrant ordering the defendants to stand trial.

Jewell—the alleged shooter—faces life in prison if convicted. His son was armed with an unloaded 12-gauge shotgun and provided “backup” for his father, according to the prosecution. He faces up to 16 years in prison if convicted.

A man who lives in the Lemon Grove home in the 1800 block of Bakersfield Street was shot multiple times the night of Aug. 7, according to Jeff Weiss, a San Diego County Sheriff's Department communications supervisor.

Deputies were called to the home at 10:16 p.m., he said. What was initially reported as a hot prowl was quickly upgraded to a home-invasion robbery, then a shooting, Weiss said.

Witnesses told deputies they saw two men fleeing with guns in a vehicle that had a flat tire. The flat was apparently caused by a witness who intentionally punctured a tire before the gunmen fled, Weiss said.

A responding deputy heard a vehicle being driven in the area with a flat tire and radioed for help. The vehicle was pulled over near Lemon Grove Avenue and Broadway.

Weiss said Jewell and Wineski were arrested and two firearms were recovered from inside the vehicle.
