San Diego County DUI Arrests Up Over Memorial Day Weekend

Arrests at the state level were down, but fatalities increased, according to the California Highway Patrol.

California Highway Patrol officers nabbed more suspected drunken drivers in San Diego County over the Memorial Day weekend than last year, according to data released Tuesday.

No one was killed on county highways and roads this year, according to the CHP. Three were killed during the same time period last year.

CHP officers arrested 83 drivers suspected of DUI, up from 76 in 2010. The Memorial Day reporting period began at 6:01 p.m. Friday and ended at 11:59 p.m. Monday.

Statewide, DUI arrests were down, but fatalities were up. The CHP reported 24 deaths across California, seven more than last year. Six of the dead were not wearing seat belts, according to the CHP.

A "" campaign reminding drivers and passengers about seat belt laws and fines for violations is under way through June 5.
