A suspicious package found Wednesday near a strip mall in Lemon Grove prompted authorities to call in the sheriff's bomb squad, authorities said.

The discovery was made about 8:40 a.m. in the 6900 block of Federal Boulevard near College Avenue, and responding deputies notified the bomb squad about 40 minutes later, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The bomb squad was still on scene investigating as of about 11:30 a.m., and the surrounding area was closed to pedestrians, sheriff's officials said.
