Slick Roads Send Cars Crashing Around County

One two-hour period saw 44 crashes on Tuesday, officials reported.

A rainy Tuesday meant slippery roads and scores of crashes around San Diego County, nearly tripling the typical number of crashes on a dry day, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Between midnight and 4 p.m. Tuesday, when the rain began to ease, there were 147 crashes reported on county highways and unincorporated streets, according to a CHP tally.

On a "good weather" day, there are usually between 50 and 75 crashes, the agency says. But on Tuesday, there were 44 crashes in just two hours—between 10 a.m. and noon. The following two-hour period—noon to 2 p.m.—also saw 40 crashes.

The rest of the week is expected to be sunny, though there is a slight chance of rain on Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.
