UPDATED: Wounded Suspect Captured After Shots Fired Near Lemon Grove Plaza

Authorities said a deputy U.S. marshal opened fire Wednesday at a suspect outside the Albertsons in Lemon Grove Plaza.

UPDATED 5:21 p.m. A 22-year-old man wanted for robbery and burglary is in custody after being shot by a deputy U.S. Marshal in front of Albertsons in Lemon Grove Plaza.

According to authorities, marshals and officers from the Fugitive Task Force were trying to apprehend Cedric Leroy Black, 22, on a number of warrants at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when Black allegedly fled in a car. Authorities say Black rammed a task force vehicle and tried to run down a deputy as he sped away from the strip mall. A deputy opened fire on the suspect’s car, shattering the windshield.

Officers chased the suspect a short distance west on State Route 94, and the suspect crashed the car at the College Grove Way freeway exit. He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities say Black suffered a gunshot would to the arm.

One deputy U.S. Marshall was reported to have received a minor leg injury during the incident, and was evaluated by emergency personnel.

A trio of marshals remained outside Albertsons as witnesses began to be released from stores in the mall after 3 p.m. Shards of glass glistened under the sun several feet away from Anna’s Linens, just west of Albertons. A marshall said the glass was evidence to be collected.

A press conference is scheduled.

A deputy U.S. marshal shot and wounded a suspect Wednesday during a road chase that began at an East County strip mall and ended at an Oak Park freeway exit, authorities reported.

The chase began about 1:30 p.m. outside the in Lemon Grove Plaza, sheriff's Lt. Jim Walker said.

After gunfire erupted in that location, the suspect drove off in a dark BMW with at least one U.S. marshal's agent in pursuit.

The suspect fled on State Route 94 before exiting at College Grove Way
and pulling to a stop, Walker said. The suspect was taken into custody there,
then transported to a hospital for treatment of wounds of unknown severity.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the gunfire or if the suspect
fired any shots.
