Spike Strips Help Catch Chase Suspect in Lemon Grove

The chase started late Tuesday night near downtown San Diego and ended in Lemon Grove, according to police.

A man suspected of leading law enforcement on a chase through parts of San Diego and into Lemon Grove was behind bars Wednesday, according to police reports.

It all started around 11:45 p.m.  Tuesday when San Diego Police tried to pull the driver over in a traffic stop, according to SDPD Officer Jim Johnson.

CHP officials tell Patch they were requested to help shortly thereafter, as the driver sped off on State Route 94 going more than 90 mph.  That driver got off at Lemon Grove Avenue, and proceeded to take authorities on a chase through the town, according to CHP Officer Robert Catano.

SDPD took back over the chase at that point, and eventually apprehended the unidentified suspect at Citronella, just north of Palm, at 11:55 p.m. according to Johnson and Catano.

Spike strips were deployed in the efforts to stop the driver, and helped stop him, according to Johnson, who added that the suspect was not fully cooperative when police tried to take him in, calling him "combative."

CBS 8 News reports that once the suspect was in the patrol car, he tried to kick out the windows and at the officers.  Officers had to pepper spray and "hogtie" the man to subdue him, the news agency reported.
