Suspicious Package Turns Out to be Box of Sausages

The box was found outside of a military recruiting office in Lemon Grove.

A suspicious package found outside of a military recruitment office in Lemon Grove Wednesday— which prompted a bomb squad response and evacuations— turned out to be a box of sausages.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department was called at 8:40 a.m. to the office in the 6900 block of Federal Boulevard in response to a call about a suspicious package.  When units arrived, they found a box that had been left at the door, said Melissa Aquino, a spokeswoman with the San Diego County Sheriff's Public Affairs office.

The box did not have any note attached, so the sheriff's Bomb Arson Unit and firefighters were called to the scene, she said. The building was evacuated and the California Highway Patrol helped to divert traffic.

No robot was used in investigating the package.  A bomb technician wore a protective suit and approached the box, only to find the sausages, Aquino said.

"It was a false alarm," she said. "But it is better to be safe than sorry."
