TODAY: Give Up Guns, Get a Gift Card

Take your unwanted guns Friday Dec. 21 to Euclid Avenue in San Diego and the Sheriff's Department will give you a $50-$100 grocery store gift card-- no questions asked.

If you have an unwanted gun, you can turn it in and get a gift card in return, no questions asked.

The Sheriff's Department is participating with the United African American Ministerial Action Council in the Guns for Gift Cards program this Friday, December 21st from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 415 Euclid Ave., San Diego.

The Sheriff's Department utilized $10,000 in asset forfeiture funds to purchase the gift cards. Since the collaboration started four years ago, 851 weapons and ammunition have been taken off the streets of San Diego County.

The guns have to work.  Money will be handed out as follows:

  • $50 will be given for shotguns and rifles,
  • $100 for hand guns and assault weapons.

There is a limit of one gift card per vehicle. The gift cards can be redeemed at area grocery stores.

Anyone participating should place the unloaded firearms in the trunk of their cars. A uniformed police officer will give instructions at the location.

All weapons collected will be destroyed.
