2 Teens Arrested on Murder Charges in Lemon Grove Shooting Death

Two suspects are in custody in connection with a shooting death in Lemon Grove, authorities said Thursday.

Over the past two days, Sheriff’s homicide detectives arrested two teens in connection with the slaying of Avel Michael Edgars, 23, found March 14 in a home on the 8200 block of Mt. Vernon Street.

According to authorities, Alfredo Hayes, 19, of San Diego, was arrested just after noon Thursday. Investigators arrested Eugene Lucious Veal, 18, at his San Diego home about 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Both teens face arraignment at 1:30 p.m. Monday in El Cajon Superior Court and are being held without bail, according to jail records.

The arrests were made with the help of the San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force, according to sheriff’s Sergeant David Martinez.

Veal was booked into the San Diego Central Jail on one count of first-degree murder, as well as felony burglary and drug charges.

Hayes was charged with one count of first-degree murder, as well as felony robbery, burglary, firearms and drug charges, according to jail records.

Sheriff’s deputies responding to  about 9:45 p.m March 14  found Edgar wounded in the residence, said sheriff’s Lt. Larry Nesbit. Paramedics were called to the scene, and Edgar was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m., according to the medical examiner.

Several people who were at the home when authorities arrived said two men were involved in the assault, according to Nesbit.

Martinez said the investigation is ongoing, and that no other information would be released.
