Democrats Elect 53rd Congressional District Delegates

Seven San Diegans will represent the district at the National Convention in September.

Democrats of the 53rd Congressional District elected seven delegates Sunday to attend the national convention.

The delegates—Taisha Brown, Karen Marie Otter, Lori Kern Greenberg, Kathleen Harmon, Craig Roberts, Matt Corrales and Ray Coyne— will represent the district, which includes Lemon Grove and La Mesa, at the convention in Charlotte, N.C.

Brown, a state employee and member of the local SEIU, said she wanted to serve the party by ensuring that the president has enough support.

"I'm a proud Democrat and I support Obama and the health care bill and to make the rich pay their fair share," she told a group of voters Sunday. "I believe I can make a difference in many ways. I'm also trying to grow in the Democratic field."

Otter said she wanted "to send a message that we love [Obama] and we're very enthusiastic for four more years of him."

Evan Parent, a member of the San Diego County Young Democrats, was elected as an alternate. Parent said it's important that today's young people are heard.

"I hear all these elected officials say Young Democrats are the future—no we're not. We are the now. We are the future, we are the now," he said.

Democratic delegates for the National Convention are being elected across the country. The number of delegates per congressional district is determined by the Democratic National Convention.
