Lemon Grove to Discuss Support of Feinstein Assault Weapon, High Capacity Magazine Ban

The city says they will discuss the issue at a special meeting on Tuesday.

In the wake of a tragic shooting at a Connecticut elementary school, gun opponents are already talking about bans on certain weapons.

One such ban is being proposed by California Senator Dianne Feinstein, in which she'd like to see certain assault weapons and ammunition magazines holding more than ten rounds outlawed on a federal level.  California already has such laws on the books.

Now, the city of Lemon Grove says they want to support Feinstein's pending bill.

"In  the wake  of last Friday's  catastrophic events in  Newtown,  Connecticut,  the Mayor has called  a concurrent special  meeting  to  address  legislation  to  be  introduced  by Senator Diane  Feinstein  to address  the  issue  of gun  violence," the Lemon Grove city council agenda item states.

A special council meeting agenda for Tuesday reads:

"The  City  Council  will  consider  a  resolution  calling  on  the  California  Congressional delegation to  support the legislative proposal of Senator Diane Feinstein to ban certain assault weapons  and ammunition  clips of more than  ten rounds and to  direct the  City Attorney  to  forward  a  copy  of  the  resolution  to  each  member  of  the  California Congressional Delegation before the beginning  of the  113th Congress."

A staff report recommends the council adopt the resolution.  A .pdf copy of the meeting agenda and staff report is attached to this article.

Feinstein authored a federal ban on assault weapons in 1994; a ban that was allowed to expire by Congress during the George W. Bush administration.

According to a Reuters report, Connecticut shooter Adam Lanza, 20, used a weapon in the Bushmaster AR-15 family, which is considered an assault weapon.  He then used a handgun to kill himself, police have said.

Now everyone should join the Brady Campaign....

God forbid if they should address the real issue........Mental Illness! Until mental illness is addressed, there will be more killings. Since they don't own guns, gun control is not the issue. Let's not forget that these killers are not law abiding citizens. If they want a gun, they will get it. As long as we keep pointing our fingers in the wrong direction, the real problem will continue to grow as we keep sweeping it under the rug. Cori

From my perspective, only the mentally ill would be deluded enough to think that treating mental illness would end these tragedies.

Let's not forget the Mother. She was so called sane. She purchased all those guns knowing full well the mental health of her son. So, I agree with LG Joe.

Just so everyone knows, this is not going to stop anything. The shooters at Columbine used only 10 round cartridges.. Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Better system of checking out buyers and having people who buy guns being more responsible (don't teach your mentally disturbed kid how to shoot guns) is a better solution. By the way Lemon Grove, did you poll your citizenry before voting on this affirmation or was this based on your own political bias?
