LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Rep. Weber Responds to Constituent Concern

Assemblywoman Shirley Weber addresses a concern raised by a Lemon Grove resident on Patch in a Sept. 20 Opinion article.

To the Editor:

A recent opinion piece titled "Assemblywoman Weber's New Office - Bad for Politics," raised questions about the location of my district office, and what impact my office's location would have on my ability to serve the people of the 79th Assembly District. I very much welcome this discussion, because it reflects the fact that the people of our district are engaged and informed in their government, and that is something of which we should all be proud.

Although my preference was to relocate to an office in the district, due to reasons beyond my control, I settled for a location in a state building which will save hardworking taxpayers thousands of dollars every year on rent. We live in an era where every budget dollar is a precious commodity, and we have worked hard with the Governor to bring our budget into balance and build a strong reserve. I believe that maintaining fiscal responsibility is vital if we are to move forward, and the location of my office reflects that priority. Also, it should be noted that it is not uncommon to find Assembly offices throughout California located in state-owned buildings either in or adjacent to their districts.

As an Assemblymember, a former educator, and a 30-year resident of San Diego, I know the citizens of our community face real challenges. That is why I have been routinely hosting mobile office hours in La Mesa, Lemon Grove and other areas within our district. In fact, my office will be holding mobile office hours on Monday, October 7th at the Malcolm X Library; Monday, October 14th at the La Mesa Library; Monday, October 21st at the Mission Valley Library and Monday, October 28th at the Lemon Grove Library from 10am - 12 p.m. to provide state information and services. I encourage everyone to stop by these events and find out what's going on in the Capitol, and access the services and resources my office is happy to provide.

I will also be hosting an open house for my constituents on Wednesday, October 2nd, and I encourage everyone to attend. My office is located at 1350 Front Street, Suite 6046; San Diego, CA 92101, which will feature live entertainment, light refreshments and a briefing of my major efforts and accomplishments to make San Diego a better place to live and work. I believe I have made the best decision possible to balance the needs of the men, women and children of the 79th district with our statewide need to maintain fiscal responsibility.
