Lemon Grove Throws Dog Owners a Bone

The city's 30-day amnesty program pardons penalties and offers savings.

It may be fall, but dog days aren't over in Lemon Grove.

The City Council recently approved an increase to dog license rates and is offering a way for pet owners to escape penalty fees and save money. But you need to act fast.

For wayward dog owners who have not licensed their pet, or let the license lapse, the city is offering a pardon. But the forgiveness has a time limit—the 30-day amnesty program starts today and ends Nov. 17. The usual $10 to $25 in penalties will be waived during this period.

With dog license fees set to go up Nov. 17, dog owners looking to save a little cash can avoid the higher cost by licensing or renewing their animal’s license before then.

All dogs in the city must be licensed at four months of age.

“We are offering pet owners this opportunity in order to encourage residents to license their pets and improve rabies vaccination compliance,” says City Manager Graham Mitchell.

The rate schedule works in favor of owners who have had their dog spayed or neutered. Money can be saved in the long run by licensing the pet for a longer period of time.
