Meet the Candidates for the 79th Assembly District Seat

Republican Mary England will face off against Democrat Shirley Weber.

When voters mark their ballots in the November election, they’ll have a choice between Republican Mary England and Democrat Shirley Weber in the race for the 79th Assembly District seat. The candidates took the top two spots in the June open primary, with England finishing just 160 votes behind Weber.

England, a three-term Lemon Grove City Councilwoman who was recruited for the seat in the newly redistricted 79th by Assemblyman Brian Jones and state Sen. Joel Anderson, is the president and CEO of the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce.

Weber, a longtime professor of African American Studies at San Diego State University, is making her first run for public office since being elected to the San Diego Unified School Board in 1988. She served two terms.
