County Supervisors OK Deal With Lemon Grove Schools on Library

The county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved an agreement with the Lemon Grove School District to house a new public library.

The 13,442-square-foot joint-use facility will be on the campus of Lemon Grove Middle School. Supervisor Dianne Jacob said the new library will be 4,000 square feet larger than the current facility.

"Lemon Grove residents have been waiting for a new library for a very, very long time," Jacob said.

The county is chipping in a little more than $200,000 toward construction costs and library materials, according to county documents. The Friends of the Lemon Grove Library is donating $60,000.

Of the 33 branches in the county library system, Lemon Grove was the 16th busiest in the 2010-11 fiscal year, with a circulation of nearly 215,000 items, according to county records.

The new branch is scheduled to open next spring.

The supervisors also renewed an agreement with The Children's Initiative to produce the biennial San Diego County Report Card on Children and Families.

The Children's Initiative is a nonprofit that works with government agencies, school districts, businesses and other charities to improve the condition of youth in the region. The report card provides data on children's health, education and safety.
