Ted Williams to be Honored on Forever Stamp

The Boston Red Sox left fielder served as a U.S. Marine Corps pilot during World War II and the Korean War.

U.S. Marine and baseball legend Ted Williams will be honored on a Forever stamp in July 2012 as part of the "Major League Baseball All Stars" commemorative Forever stamps set.

The Boston Red Sox left fielder made his debut in 1939. He played his final season in 1960, but he missed several seasons when he served as a U.S. Marine Corps pilot during World War II and the Korean War.

Born and raised in San Diego, Williams was the last Major League baseball player to bat .400 for a season, which was in 1941. He hit .344 during a 19-year career, including 521 home runs. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.

In addition to Williams, the U.S. Postal Service will recognize Joe DiMaggio, Larry Doby and Willie Stargell, whose stamps were announced earlier.

Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate.
