History Alive: Great Barbers of Lemon Grove

The Lemon Grove Historical Society kicks off its 34th annual History Alive lecture series with “Great Barbers of Lemon Grove,” featuring Bill Ware, founder of the legendary Tonsorial Parlor on Main Street, and Dr. Willie Morrow, founder of the groundbreaking California Curl on Olive Street.

According to society president Helen Ofield, the brick Tonsorial Parlor was “the last word in folksy charm” in Lemon Grove and may have served as the town's original jail. Morrow's career includes advising the U.S. military on proper care of African American soldiers' hair, creating his own line of hair care products, and founding the San Diego Monitor, the award-winning black newspaper.

This expert duo has “clipped, shaved and styled a grateful public to tonsorial splendor,” Ofield says.
