Remembering the Lemon Grove Incident

Roberto Alvarez, professor and director of the Center for Global California Studies at UCSD, will discuss the nation's first successful school desegregation court case, which occurred in Lemon Grove. Alvarez has a very personal connection to what has become known as the Lemon Grove Incident—his father was the lead plaintiff in the case.

The lecture will provide an overview of the 1930 case in the context of racial desegregation in the U.S. prior to the landmark 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education decision. The presentation emphasizes the role of the Mexican-American and immigrant populations in U.S. school desegregation and features a docu-drama.

Part of the “Race: Are We So Different?” exhibition, which continues through May 15.
