Helix on a Mission at Homecoming: Beat Valhalla, Save the World

Theme of 2012 Homecoming is ambitious, but who ever tried to deny the Highlanders?

Helix Charter High School, like James Bond, hopes to save the planet.

Well, maybe its graduates will. But the theme of this year’s Homecoming is “0012: Mission to Save the World,” according to Kathryn “Kat” Shaw, *cheer adviser of the La Mesa school that draws students from Lemon Grove.

Festivities include a spirit-building carnival from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, where school spokeswoman Jennifer Osborn says campus organizations will be selling food and other items to raise funds, “and there will be games and activities (like Dunk Your Tutor).”

Friday night’s Homecoming football game against Valhalla High School of El Cajon will see a King and Queen crowned with fireworks after the league opener. Junior varsity plays at 4:30 p.m. with varsity at 7.

From 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, a semi-formal dance is planned in the gym.

Meanwhile, Helix is 3-1 and ranked No. 3 in the county (behind perennial power Oceanside and La Costa Canyon).

East County Sports reports: “It’s hard to believe that Helix could ever be the underdog in a league race although a lot of people think the Highlanders should be this year. History speaks for itself though, and the defending state champions are not going to roll over easily in Friday’s (Oct. 5) Grossmont Hills League opener and Homecoming showdown with Valhalla.”

The online sports site predicts the Scotties will edge the Norsemen 28-20.

Last year, Helix won a laugher at Homecoming, beating West Hills 62-3.

*Editor’s note: An earlier version of this report said Kat Shaw was ASB adviser. She now is cheer adviser.
