Hayden Dagman, an 8-year-old from Lemon Grove, is getting an early start saving up for his college education.

The Waldorf School of San Diego second grader recently was selected to receive $529 to open a ScholarShare college savings account, according to a news release.

Hayden was one of 10 winners of ScholarShare's "Love Your School" promotion announced this week. The sweepstakes, which took place on ScholarShare's Facebook page, not only gave the selected winners a savings account, but provided each child's school with a matching $529 contribution.

After liking ScholarShare's Facebook page, the students' parents or guardians filled out an online entry form recounting why they love their child's school. Winners, ranging in age from 5 to 13, were picked at random.

"A 529 college savings account can help parents and other relatives save for future college tuition costs and fees," ScholarShare officials said in a news release. "With tuition and fees continually rising, parents and students are often required to take out expensive loans.  California’s 529 college savings program can play a major role in a comprehensive savings plan."
