Prep Football: Matadors Host Fallbrook in Opener
Mount Miguel, with Dunn and Jackson returning, is ranked 10th in the section in preseason polls.
One of the fastest rising football programs in East County is Mount Miguel High. Under coach Tom Karlo, the Matadors have earned a preseason Top 10 ranking heading into Friday’s 7 p.m. season opener against visiting Fallbrook.
Karlo, now in his seventh season, has become one of the top offensive masterminds in area high school football. No question, Mount Miguel is one of the most explosive offenses in the region this fall. The primary threat in the attack is Derrick Dunn (195 carries for 1,104 yards and 22 TDs last season).
Quarterback Ernest Williams, who shared the signal-calling role a year ago, will likely take all the snaps this season. He has a bevy of quality receivers, including senior Anthony Ortega.

On the defensive side, the Matadors are equally as loaded. Two-way tackle Malcolm Jackson (6-3, 255), who has a scholarship to the University of Washington in hand, is the cornerstone.
The Matadors are also strong at linebacker, led by 2010 Grossmont Valley League Defensive Player of the Year Cory Littleton (6-4, 215). He’s certain to play D-1 football at the next level. Not to be overlooked is senior linebacker Trevion Wilson (6-0, 219).

Henry Ingram will join Ortega in what should be a solid Mount Miguel secondary.
Both the Union-Tribune and Sportswriters/Sportscasters polls have the Matadors listed 10th in the county in their preseason rankings.
