School Board to Vote On Layoffs at Tuesday Night's Meeting

Trustees continue to grapple with closing the gap on an estimated $4.3 million deficit.

With a budget deficit looming, the five-member governing board of the Lemon Grove School District will consider at Tuesday’s meeting whether to issue pink slips to dozens of part-time employees and eliminate their jobs at the end of the school year.

The cuts would affect 31 classified employees who staff the preschool and extended day programs, assist in the locker rooms, and provide technological help. Two bilingual assistants are also among the positions targeted.

District administration is recommending the cuts in an effort to close the gap on an anticipated $4.3 million shortfall in the coming school year.

If passed, the layoffs would take place no later than June 30.

Other items the school board will consider tonight include a contract that would bring a charter high school to the shuttered Palm Middle School campus.

For students in grades 9 through 12, Liberty Charter High School would be operated by Literacy First Charter Schools.

The license to use the site would bring in a $300,000 annual fee to the district.

The school board meets at 6 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at the Lemon Grove Community Center.
